Cylinder liner or cylinder sleeves is a cylindrical part fitted into the engine to form a cylinder. It is one of the most functional integral parts of an engine.
All kinds of parts of a machine or engine get worn out due to its continuous usage and working. Proper maintenance and routine checks ups are necessary to make a machine operate smoothly for a longer period.
There are many reasons due to which inner components like cylinder sleeves and Piston pins wear.
The wear occurs in the cylinder liner or piston pin is mainly because of the following reasons:-
1) Frictional
2) Corrosion
3) Abrasion
4) Scuffing or Adhesion
1)Frictional
Friction is frequently produced when two surfaces slide over each other. Friction leads to wear in both the surfaces. The surfaces of piston rings collide with cylinder liner and friction is created which results in wear. There are various factors affecting friction wear like speed, material used, lubrication, temperature within, pressure, maintenance, load on engine and combination capacity.
2) Corrosion
Corrosion can be caused in Cylinder sleeves due to the following reasons:
I) Burning heavy fuel oil in the combustion leads to corrosion as it heavy fuel oil contains high sulfur. Due to a chemical reaction taking place inside, corrosion takes place.
II) When cylinder oil quantity is not in proper proportion with the load, it leads to corrosion of the cylinder liner.
3) Abrasion
Abrasion wear is caused in the cylinder liner because of the hard particles present and created during the combustion. Hard particles like metal swarf, catalytic fines in the fuel, ash formed during the process, dust particles in the lube oil cause abrasive wear.
Adhesion or Scuffing
This type of wear is caused due to local welding of particles of piston ring and the cylinder liner surface. As the ring moves inside, its welding outbreak leads to the formation of abrasive material. It is also caused due to insufficient oil which leads to over temperature and so wear takes place. Due to such reasons adhesion or scuffing wear take place.
Wear can definitely be minimized by performing certain steps after turning off the device. Regular and proper maintenance will keep your device long-lasting.
